College of Education Launches Maiden DSRA Newsletter to Champion Climate Awareness

The College of Education, University of Ghana, has officially launched its maiden DSRA Newsletter as part of activities to commemorate the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA). The virtual ceremony, which drew participation from faculty, staff, students and other members of the University community, was held under the timely theme: “Leveraging Education, Information and Communication for a Sustainable Climate Future.”

The launch served as a platform to highlight the College’s commitment to using education and communication as tools for building climate resilience. The newsletter, developed collaboratively across the College’s three constituent Schools, showcases academic milestones, research output and engagement activities geared towards sustainability and social transformation.

In his keynote address, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College, described the launch as both timely and symbolic. “As we confront the harsh realities of climate change and environmental degradation and the far-reaching impact they have on our health, livelihoods and national development, this theme reminds us of the urgent need to act,” he stated. “It also highlights the powerful role that knowledge and communication can play in building a more resilient future.”

Professor Codjoe commended the Planning Committee for their dedication also commended the level of participation in the virtual event and encouraged all participants to engage actively with the publication and its insights.

The highlight of the event was the formal presentation of the newsletter by Dr. Monica Mensah Danquah, Chair of the Planning and Implementation Committee. With clarity and conviction, she walked participants through the newsletter’s pages, drawing attention to key initiatives, faculty research, and landmark events across the three Schools: the School of Continuing and Distance Education, the School of Education and Leadership, and the School of Information and Communication Studies.

Dr. Danquah contextualised the newsletter within the College’s broader mission to prepare students for an increasingly complex climate future. “At the College of Education, we believe that preparing learners for a climate-resilient future must go beyond traditional teaching,” she said. “It requires critical thinking, digital innovation, and equitable access to knowledge.”

She outlined three strategic priorities underpinning the College’s approach:

  • Transformative pedagogies that nurture critical thinking and sustainable behaviour;
  • Innovative digital platforms to combat climate misinformation and enhance public literacy;
  • Open educational resources and inclusive technologies to bridge gaps in access, especially in underserved and remote communities.

In closing, Professor Codjoe paid tribute to the unique and complementary contributions of the College’s three Schools, whose synergy has propelled its academic and societal impact.

“This newsletter is a testament to what is possible when we collaborate with vision and purpose,” he remarked. “It’s not just a publication, it’s a statement of momentum. A call to action. A reflection of our commitment to shaping a better future through knowledge.”

With those words, the inaugural DSRA Newsletter was officially launched, poised to serve as both a record of progress and a springboard for future innovation in climate education.
